Mourning in the City of Light

Paris in mourning.JPG

Paris is often called the City of Light, la ville lumière, not because of its lights (the name predates electricity) but for its vitality in the Age of Enlightenment (one reason the 18th century in France is called Le Siècle des Lumières). Romanticism would come later; first, though, the emphasis on intellect.

Which is why you don't hear "Pray for Paris" from the French. This is not about religion but ideology. Not Muslims v. Christians but hatred v. inclusiveness.

No calls for "revenge," just solidarity.
